Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts will soon have a new destination along the Grand Trunk Trail as a community partnership brings a bird-viewing platform to Thames Vista Farm, overlooking fields where threatened bobolinks and eastern meadowlarks return each year to nest.
The project is a collaborative effort involving the Town of St. Marys, Thames Vista Farm, the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority, and the Rotary Club of St. Marys. The Rotary Club has committed $5,000 toward construction materials, helping transform the vision into a lasting community asset.
Located along the west leg of the Grand Trunk Trail, the new platform will provide visitors with a unique opportunity to observe grassland birds in their natural habitat while learning about the importance of conservation. The project will include an accessible stone-dust pathway, a raised viewing platform, a switchback ramp, and interpretive signage that explains the significance of the habitat and the species it supports.
The viewing area overlooks fields at Thames Vista Farm, where local farmer Derek Ruthig has adopted farming practices that encourage threatened grassland birds to return each year to nest. By delaying the harvest of hay in selected fields, he helps protect nesting habitat for species such as the bobolink and eastern meadowlark, demonstrating how agriculture and environmental stewardship can work hand in hand.
The completed platform will enhance the Grand Trunk Trail while creating a new destination for birdwatchers, students, families and visitors. It will also provide opportunities for environmental education and showcase the value of community partnerships in protecting local natural spaces.
