Accompanied by James—an eager black Lab puppy currently in training—Trixie Middleton-Mohr shared a detailed look into the dedication, science, and passion behind breeding, raising, and placing certified service dogs. From early socialization to specialized task training, the presentation highlighted how these extraordinary animals transform the daily lives of individuals and families navigating complex health and developmental challenges.
Transforming Lives Across Three Key Pillars
- Autism Support Programs: Service dogs are specially trained to provide safety, physical anchoring, and emotional comfort for children on the autism spectrum. They help prevent bolting, improve sleep patterns, and offer a calming presence during sensory overloads.
- PTSD Assistance for Veterans & First Responders: Designed for individuals living with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, these dogs are taught to interrupt panic attacks, create physical boundaries in public places, and provide a grounded sense of security for heroes recovering from trauma.
- Facility & Companion Interventions: Working alongside professionals in schools, judicial settings, and clinical environments, facility dogs offer emotional support to entire groups or individuals going through traumatic experiences.
The Journey of a Service Dog
Trixie walked Rotarians through the extensive journey each puppy undergoes before becoming a fully accredited service dog. The process relies heavily on dedicated volunteer puppy raisers who open their homes for the first 12 to 18 months. During this crucial window, puppies are socialized in real-world environments—learning basic obedience, public etiquette, and confidence in diverse settings—before returning to NSD for advanced, specialized skill training customized to their future recipient's exact needs.
Rotary Speaker Recognition
Following an engaging Q&A session where members gained a deeper appreciation for the strict standards and loving care involved in the program, Rotarian Claire Sherwin presented Trixie with a warm thank you on behalf of the St. Marys Rotary Club.
In keeping with club tradition, a book is being donated to the local library in honor of our guest speaker. At Trixie’s special request, the library dedication plate inside the front cover will recognize both Trixie and her dedicated four-legged companion in training, James!
