The Rotary Club of St. Marys was pleased to welcome our 2025–26 Rotary Youth Exchange student, Samir Zogbi, as he delivered his first presentation to the club. With members, host families, and a representative from The Independent in attendance, Samir introduced us to his home country, his family, and his life in Argentina.

There's more to the story…

Introducing Argentina

Samir began by situating Argentina on the map — a South American country of more than 47 million people. He highlighted key figures in the country’s history, including national national heroes and influential educators. He also shared cultural touchstones such as traditional foods, music, and dance, including the iconic tango born in Buenos Aires.

Argentina’s natural beauty was also on display. Samir spoke about Iguazú Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, and Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Americas.

Family, School, and Community

Samir introduced his family, including his parents and younger brother, who is preparing for a work-and-travel experience in the United States. He also showed photos of his family dog, proudly noting its “patient level.”

He shared images of his hometown of Berisso, located near La Plata and Buenos Aires, as well as his school, where he studies physical education. Outside of school, Samir plays football (soccer) and participates in activities through his local Rotaract Club, including community service projects.

Why Rotary Youth Exchange?

When asked how he became involved with Rotary, Samir explained that youth exchange runs in the family — many of his relatives have participated in exchange programs, and his uncle is active in the Rotary district in Argentina. Inspired by these connections, he chose to pursue his own exchange year abroad.

Life in St. Marys

Samir was happy to share that he has already enjoyed many aspects of life in St. Marys, including time with host families, time spent at the pool hall, and discovering maple syrup, which he called a favourite part of Canada so far.

He also spoke briefly about hopes for the year ahead — experiencing winter activities like skiing, seeing more of Canada, and continuing to build friendships and memories.

Future Plans

Looking further ahead, Samir shared that he does not plan to join the family business. His goals are shifting toward a different path, possibly law.

A Strong Start to a Memorable Year

Members thanked Samir for a thorough, engaging, and well-prepared presentation. Claire S. expressed appreciation for his strong introduction and noted that exchange students represent “the top echelon of youth today.”

We look forward to supporting Samir throughout the rest of his exchange year and experiencing Canada with him.
