The Rotary Club of St. Marys proudly unveiled a plaque honouring the club’s 100 Presidents, generously donated by Rotarian Claire Sherwin and his wife Mary. This plaque commemorates the men and women whose leadership shaped the club's history and includes a holder for one of the symbolic walking sticks crafted by the late PDG Maurice Oliver. These cherished canes, rich in Rotary symbolism, celebrate service and tradition, reflecting the legacy of dedication that continues to inspire the Rotary community.
As part of this celebration, we are unveiling a special new plaque designed to honour these 100 Presidents. This plaque, generously donated by Rotarian Claire Sherwin and his wife Mary, is a heartfelt tribute to the leaders who have made our club what it is today. The plaque is more than a simple commemoration; it symbolizes the enduring values of service, fellowship, and community that are at the heart of Rotary.
A unique feature of the plaque is its dedicated holder for one of the handcrafted walking sticks created by the late PDG Maurice Oliver. These walking sticks, rich in Rotary symbolism, were presented by Maurice to club Presidents as tokens of appreciation for their service. Each cane tells a story, with intricate details representing the Rotary wheel, the Four-Way Test, the Rotary Foundation, and the many projects Rotarians undertake around the world. Maurice’s legacy of craftsmanship and generosity extended far beyond St. Marys, as many Rotarians across District 6330 and beyond were honored to receive these cherished canes.
Reflecting on this tradition, Claire Sherwin shared his personal connection to the walking sticks and the tradition they represent. Having served as President twice—20 years apart—Claire spoke about the deep pride and continuity that Rotary leadership brings. To honour the legacy of leadership, Claire symbolically returned one of his older walking sticks to the club, entrusting it to the plaque to be passed from President to President in the years to come.
This plaque is a tribute not only to the individual leaders who have served but also to the collective strength and spirit of our club. It represents the men and women who have dedicated themselves to Service Above Self, ensuring that the Rotary Club of St. Marys thrives and continues to make a meaningful difference in our community and the world.
